Exercising with your new tattoo? Here's how to do it safely

Just got a new tattoo and eager to hit the gym with it? It's often smarter to wait a bit. A new tattoo is an open wound, and sweating, chafing, or contact with bacteria can significantly hinder healing. In this blog, you'll learn when you can safely exercise again, which sports you should avoid for a while, and how to properly care for your tattoo while you're active.

When can you exercise again after a new tattoo?

Wait at least 48 hours before exercising after getting a new tattoo. For intensive workouts or contact sports, it's better to wait 1 to 2 weeks. Your tattoo should only be subjected to stress once the skin no longer feels tight, has no scabs, and feels smooth.

  • If you do combat sports, swimming, or weight training, plan for a longer break.
  • In doubt? Always ask your artist for advice.

Why is exercising with a new tattoo risky?

Exercising sounds healthy — and it is — but right after your tattoo session, your immune system is working hard to recover. Your skin is vulnerable. Exercising too soon with a new tattoo can lead to:

  • ❌ Ink loss due to excessive sweating
  • ❌ Infections from dirty gym equipment or bacteria
  • ❌ Friction from clothing or sports bandages
  • ❌ Delayed healing

Which sports are safe with a new tattoo?

After 2 to 3 days, you can start with light exercise — as long as your tattoo isn't compromised:

  • ✅ Light strength training (without pressure on your tattoo)
  • ✅ Mobility exercises or yoga
  • ✅ Low-intensity cardio (cycling or walking)
  • ✅ Anything where your tattoo remains uncovered and you don't sweat excessively

Always wear loose, breathable clothing and take good care of your tattoo with products from our tattoo aftercare collection.

What should you avoid for a while?

Until your tattoo is healed, these are absolute no-gos:

  • ❌ Swimming (sea, pool, lake)
  • ❌ Sauna and steam room
  • ❌ Contact sports (boxing, football, jiu-jitsu)
  • ❌ Intensive strength training or HIIT
  • ❌ Tight clothing or sports bandages on your tattoo

How do you care for your tattoo if you DO exercise?

Sometimes you can't avoid it: you HAVE to exercise. Then do it smartly:

  1. Use tattoo film: TattooMed Tattoo Film protects your tattoo from dirt, sweat, and friction. Many people call it second skin — we call it TattooMed Tattoo Film. It acts as a breathable second skin: ideal for light movement and safe exercising with a new tattoo.
  2. Clean immediately after exercise: Wash your tattoo with a pH-neutral soap like our TattooMed Cleansing Gel.
  3. Moisturize: Apply a restorative aftercare cream like TattooMed After Tattoo to your tattoo.
  4. Watch for signs: Do you see redness, swelling, or pain? Stop exercising and let your skin rest.

“We ourselves went exercising with a fresh tattoo — crossfit, no less. The tattoo was neatly covered with film, but oh man… the sweat. After the workout, that film really had to come off. So yes, protected from dirt? Absolutely. But from excessive sweating? Not entirely 😉”

When is your tattoo healed?

Healing usually takes 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the location, size, and your skin type. Your tattoo is healed when:

  • ✔️ The skin feels smooth again
  • ✔️ All scabs and flakes are gone
  • ✔️ There is no more itching, redness, or sensitivity
