Swimming with your new tattoo: everything you need to know

Vrouw met tattoo in water - wanneer mag je zwemmen met je nieuwe tattoo

Have you just gotten a new tattoo and want to know when you can swim again? You're not alone! This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive at TattooMed. And to be honest: the answer is more important than you might think.

In this blog, we'll explain exactly why swimming with a fresh tattoo is risky, how long you should wait, and what you can do if there's truly no other option. Are you using tattoo film? Then we also have a separate blog about swimming with tattoo film.

Can you swim with a new tattoo?

The short answer: no, not right away. A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound. Water – whether from a swimming pool, the sea, or a lake – is your biggest enemy for now. Swimming with a new tattoo carries risks you absolutely want to avoid.

Why swimming with a new tattoo is risky

Your skin is extra vulnerable after getting a tattoo. Chlorine, salt water, and bacteria can severely damage your fresh tattoo. These are the biggest dangers:

  • Infections: Swimming pools, lakes, and the sea are full of bacteria. These can infect your open wound, leading to pain, swelling, and even scars.
  • Delayed healing: Chlorine and salt water dry out your skin. This can cause your tattoo to itch, flake, or even crack.
  • Faded ink: Chemical substances can affect the ink. Your tattoo will look dull and the lines will fade faster.

Swimming too soon? Don't do it. You risk your tattoo becoming infected or the colors losing their vibrancy. A shame for your artwork.

When can you swim again with your new tattoo?

Always wait until your tattoo is fully healed before going swimming. This usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. But be aware: this varies per person, per tattoo, and per body placement. How do you know if your tattoo is healed?

  • Your tattoo no longer feels painful or sensitive
  • There are no more scabs or flakes
  • The skin around your tattoo is completely smooth again

In doubt? Always ask your tattoo artist. Or read our blog When is my tattoo healed?. Better to wait an extra week than regret a damaged tattoo for months.

Can you swim with tattoo film?

We often get this question: can I swim if I cover my tattoo with tattoo film? In principle, we advise against it. Tattoo film is not 100% waterproof, or the edges may be open, giving bacteria more opportunity. But sometimes you can't avoid it – for example, if you're on vacation and really need to get into the water.

Our tip if it's truly unavoidable:

  • Apply a double layer of tattoo film over your tattoo
  • Stay in the water for as short a time as possible
  • Remove the film immediately after swimming
  • Wash your tattoo immediately with lukewarm water and a mild tattoo soap, such as TattooMed Cleansing Gel
  • If your tattoo is still fresh: apply new tattoo film
  • If your tattoo is further along in the healing process: apply a thin layer of TattooMed After Tattoo

⚠️ Please note: this is an emergency solution. It's not ideal and your artist will probably advise against it. But if it's truly the only option, this is the safest way. Also read our blog Swimming with tattoo film? Here's the real story.

How to protect your tattoo during the healing process?

Patience is your best friend. But there are more things you can do to protect your tattoo until you can swim again:

  • Keep your tattoo clean and dry. Wash it gently with lukewarm water and a special tattoo soap. Pat dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Apply a thin layer of aftercare cream regularly to your tattoo. This keeps your skin supple and prevents itching.
  • Avoid direct sunlight on your fresh tattoo. If you still need to go outside? Cover your tattoo with clothing or use a sun protective film. Our Sun Film blocks 98% of sun rays, but is not intended for swimming.

What if you went swimming too soon?

Don't panic! Immediately clean your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild tattoo soap. Then apply a thin layer of aftercare cream to your tattoo. Keep a close eye on your tattoo in the following days. Do you see redness, swelling, or pus? Then contact your tattoo artist or general practitioner.

Swimming with your new tattoo: the most important do's & don'ts at a glance

✅ Do's:

❌ Don'ts:

  • Do not swim with a fresh tattoo (not even with film, unless it's truly unavoidable)
  • Do not expose your tattoo to chlorine, salt water, or stagnant water
  • Do not scratch scabs or flakes
  • Do not skip aftercare

Finally

In summary: swimming with a new tattoo is risky and can lead to infections, delayed healing, and fading of your tattoo. Give your tattoo time to heal and take good care of it. This way, your tattoo will remain beautiful for years, and you'll soon be able to jump into the water carefree.

Don't forget the sun! ☀️

Is your tattoo finally healed and you're diving back into the water? Don't forget that sunlight also has a significant impact on your tattoo. UV radiation can fade your ink, even if your tattoo already feels completely smooth and healed.

So protect your tattoo even after healing with good sun protection. Use a high SPF sunscreen or a special product for tattooed skin – such as our Sun Protection LSF30/50, Daily Tattoo Care, or Sun Film for on the go.

This way, your tattoo will remain clear, colorful, and well protected against fading, even during the summer.

Good luck with your new tattoo – and enjoy that first dip even more later!
