Permanent Make-up (PMU): Useful tips, what's popular and what are the costs?

What is the difference between PMU and a tattoo?
Just like tattoo artists, PMU specialists apply color pigment into the skin, permanently changing its color. Beauty specialists use super-thin needles that penetrate less deeply into the skin than tattoo needles.
Because the color pigment in PMU is introduced into the upper skin layers, it fades completely after a few years. This is a major difference from a tattoo, which remains permanent. Sometimes a small residue of the PMU remains visible.
Applying PMU to the skin irritates the skin much less than a classic tattoo. And according to make-up experts, a PMU session is also much less painful. So, two important advantages of PMU: the skin is hardly affected, and you can shine without spending time applying make-up!
And this is the difference between PMU and microblading:
As the name suggests, this technique uses very fine blades instead of needles. These create small cuts in the eyebrows which are then filled with color pigment.
This technique differs significantly from classic PMU methods and tattooing, but the effect is the same. In most cases, microblading needs to be repeated to maintain the color well.
Which PMU methods are most popular?
Permanent make-up is available for every part of the face. The facial areas most commonly treated with PMU are listed below.
- Eyebrows. Microblading makes eyebrows fuller and gives them a beautiful shape. Even completely artificial eyebrows are shaped very naturally with PMU.
- Eyelids. PMU eyeliner on the upper and lower eyelid is applied very easily and gently. - Beauty spots and freckles. On Instagram and Snapchat, tattooed freckles are a trend. If they are applied with PMU, they fade over time. The advantage of PMU is that they look more natural than tattooed freckles.
How long does permanent make-up last?
A few months after the PMU treatment, you can expect a slight fading of the color. This is normal because pigment is used instead of ink. As the skin slowly renews itself, the PMU gradually fades. This happens very gradually so that you always maintain a natural look. Eyebrow PMU lasts about 1-3 years. Eyeliner PMU lasts 1 to 5 years. And sometimes longer.
To consider: PMU treatments are a lot more expensive than regular tattoo sessions. Keep in mind that PMU is also temporary. After a while, you will need a new treatment.
A plus point of PMU: once the skin has healed after the treatment, you can safely have it treated a second time. So if something isn't quite to your liking, you can always have your PMU corrected (or refreshed if you deem it necessary).

PMU is a science in itself
Applying permanent make-up to achieve a beautiful, natural look requires a lot of experience from the beautician and a good eye for what aesthetically suits a face. Every face is unique, which makes each treatment very specific and refined.
There is no room for creativity here, because the face is far too precious for that. Classic tattoo artists therefore almost never start a PMU treatment themselves. They prefer to hire a PMU specialist who has much more knowledge of this special field and has also been specifically trained for it.
