Can you swim with tattoo film? Here's the truth

Have you just had a new tattoo and are wondering if you can swim with tattoo film? You're not alone! This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get at TattooMed. It makes sense, too — because you'd prefer to enjoy the water as soon as possible, especially when it's warm outside. But what's the real deal with swimming, showering, and sunbathing when your tattoo is still under film?

Quick answer: swimming with tattoo film?

Preferably not. Showering is allowed, if you keep it short. Sun and water pose risks as long as your tattoo isn't healed. Wait 2–4 weeks before swimming. Until then: clean, protect, and moisturize well.

Can you swim with tattoo film or second skin?

The short answer: swimming with tattoo film is not recommended.

The self-adhesive tattoo film (also known as second skin) is water-resistant enough for showering, but not suitable for prolonged water exposure. Think of swimming, bathing, or floating in the sea: you really need to postpone that. The film is splash-proof, but not completely waterproof. Water can still seep under the film through the edges — and you want to prevent that at all costs.

💡 Tattoo film is actually excellent protection in the first few days. It keeps out bacteria, dust, and friction, and creates a clean wound environment where your tattoo can heal peacefully. But… only as long as the film adheres well and stays dry. That's precisely why swimming (or bathing) is a bad idea.

💡 Are you considering temporarily covering your tattoo with film to be able to swim? Don't. Water can still get under the film — with all the associated risks.

Why is swimming with tattoo film not a good idea?

A new tattoo is essentially an open wound. Water from swimming pools, lakes, or the sea is full of bacteria, viruses, sand, or chemicals (like chlorine) that can irritate or even infect your tattoo. If that water gets under your film, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria.

The result? An infected tattoo can cause extra pain, swelling, pus formation, scarring, and permanent damage to the design. In some cases, medical treatment may even be necessary. Not something you want to risk.

What happens if you do swim with tattoo film?

Suppose you do take a quick dip. Don't panic — but be smart. Follow these steps:

  • Immediately remove the film after swimming
  • Wash your tattoo thoroughly with the TattooMed Cleansing Gel, a pH-neutral soap specifically for tattooed skin
  • Gently pat dry with a clean cloth
  • Apply new film if your tattoo is not yet sufficiently healed
  • Or continue with your aftercare routine with TattooMed After Tattoo

"We ourselves did go swimming with film, by the way — during a front crawl course, no less. With two layers of film on, we dove into the water. And honestly? You feel quite nervous. You don't know how quickly you want to shower afterward, clean with Cleansing Gel, and apply new film. Only when that clean film is back on do you feel reassured."

But of course, it's better to avoid this scenario altogether. Not swimming for a while = preventing a lot of trouble.

And showering then? Is that allowed?

Yes! Showering with tattoo film is allowed. The film is designed to repel water during short showers. Please note:

  • Do not use too hot a shower
  • Do not let water spray directly on your tattoo
  • Gently pat the film dry after showering (do not rub)

TattooMed Sun film: UV protection, but not a free pass

Is your tattoo still under film and you're going outside? Then use TattooMed Sun film for temporary UV protection. This blocks up to 98% of sun rays and is ideal in summer: your tattoo remains protected, while you can still go outside.

But don't sunbathe with it! It can quickly get warm under the film, which hinders healing and can cause the adhesive to loosen. See it as a protective plaster, not a sunshade.

What are the risks of water or sun with film?

  • 🔴 Risk of infection – water under the film = breeding ground for bacteria
  • 🔴 Fading of your tattoo – due to salt, chlorine, or UV radiation
  • 🔴 Poor healing – too much heat or moisture slows down recovery
  • 🔴 Peeling film – sweat, heat, or water softens the adhesive

What is allowed and what is not allowed with tattoo film?

✅ Do:

  • Protect your tattoo with Tattoo film in the first few days after getting it
  • In summer, preferably use TattooMed Sun film — it protects your tattoo from harmful UV radiation for up to 5 days
  • Take short showers with film on your tattoo
  • After accidental swimming: clean and care for immediately

❌ Don't:

  • Swim in a swimming pool, sea, or lake
  • Bathe with tattoo film
  • Lie in the sun for hours
  • Apply new film without first thoroughly cleaning

How long should tattoo film stay on?

Always follow your tattoo artist's advice. On average, tattoo film stays on for 3 to 5 days, depending on your skin type and the type of film.

Replace the film sooner if:

  • The film starts to come loose
  • You experience itching, irritation, or redness
  • A lot of wound fluid accumulates under it (a separate blog on this will follow soon)

TattooMed tip: opt for certainty

Want to be on the safe side? Then wait until your tattoo is completely healed before swimming or lying in the sun for long periods. This usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.

Please note: your tattoo is only truly healed when your skin feels completely smooth again and there are no more scabs or flakes visible. 👉 When is my tattoo healed?
