This is how Tattoomed's sun protection works on your skin

Good sun protection

It's wonderful when the sun shines; we go to the beach, enjoy outdoor sports, or find a cozy terrace.

All of it is great fun, and it makes us feel good.

But the sun also takes a toll on your tattoo, so be careful!

Even on cloudy days, UV light penetrates deep into the skin's layers. Of course, UV-A and UV-B light contain some vitamin D, and your skin gets a nice tan. To be fair.

But we also know that if the radiation is too strong and you stay in it too long, your skin can age quickly, turn red, or even get sunburned.

You can also see these changes in your skin if you have a tattoo.

To provide extra good protection for tattooed skin against UV radiation, TattooMed has developed a Sun Protection line.

These products are moisturizing and provide excellent protection against UV radiation.

UV radiation and tattooed skin; why don't they mix?

Sunbeams affect our skin and the color pigment within it. You should see it this way: when you get a tattoo, ink is injected into the second layer of skin, beneath the epidermis (the top layer of skin) which is constantly renewed.

UV-A radiation can therefore easily reach and damage the pigment in the skin. UV-B radiation also penetrates deep into the epidermis and gives the skin that beautiful sun-kissed tan (though it doesn't last long).

UV-B also damages skin cells and thereby the skin's natural protection. So, it's not a trivial matter.

If you expose your tattooed skin to the sun too often and for too long, the damaged pigment in your skin can be broken down by your own body and accumulate in the adrenal glands or lymph nodes. UV-A and UV-B radiation both contribute to accelerated skin aging and can attack the DNA of your cells.

This is not really news, but we mention it anyway, because the power of the sun is still greatly underestimated, often with serious consequences. But if you manage your sun exposure, by seeking shade in time and applying sunscreen frequently enough, you can truly enjoy it.

You should do that!


What happens to my tattoo if I get too much sun (UV radiation)?

  • Colors fade (which is a good way to get rid of your yellow and red tattoo colors, by the way?).

  • Small spots appear in the pores of your skin. This is because darker colors are better protected against radiation.

  • The contours of your tattoo become less sharp.

  • Small distortion of the motif (can happen after sunburn).


Effective protection for your skin and your tattoo: why sunscreen is truly indispensable

Most sunscreens act as a protective filter for the skin. They always contain a UV filter. TattooMed Sun Protection products incorporate UV-A and UV-B filters to provide optimal protection against sunlight. The sun protection factor indicated on the cream tells you how long you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned.


Below, we've listed a few facts about sunscreen for you:


  • With TattooMed Sun Protection SPF30, your skin can tolerate 25 times more sunlight than without sun protection.

  • The extra strong TattooMed Sun Protection SPF50 cream protects the skin 50 times more against sunlight.

  • How high the radiation exposure per hour is depends, among other things, on the environment (e.g., high in the mountains or on the water) and your skin type. Normal skin already reacts after 20 to 60 minutes in the blazing sun. And the more often the skin is damaged, the more dangerous it is. In the long term, you can experience really nasty consequences from this.

  • SPF only refers to protection against UV-B radiation!



Sunscreen with a mineral filter

All TattooMed Sun Protection creams and the TattooMed Sun Protection Stick SPF 30 contain small mineral particles (titanium oxide and zinc oxide). These particles ensure that sunlight is reflected and that radiation does not reach the skin.

They essentially act as a small protective film of reflective metal particles. At TattooMed, we also use physical filters in our sun protection products, as these reduce the risk of allergies.


The pros and cons of mineral filters

  • Because the color of the microparticles in the cream is white, a white cast may remain on your skin.

  • UV radiation does not penetrate the skin and has a cooling effect.

  • The thin film layer on your skin washes off easily in water. Therefore, you should reapply regularly if you go swimming.


Sunscreen with a chemical filter

Chemical filters are absorbed by the skin and thus protect at the smallest level (molecular level).

These filters are surrounded by a kind of electronic shells that react to light and convert UV radiation into heat (harmless and comparable to infrared light).

Because color pigment under the skin reacts to heat and can be broken down by high temperatures, it is better not to use sunscreen with a chemical filter on your tattoo.

Animal and environmentally friendly testing

At TattooMed, we develop our products to be as animal and environmentally friendly as possible.

Our products are 100% vegan and are not tested on animals. Our tests meet the standards and requirements of the German Cosmetic Decree and International ISO standards.

We conduct tests as follows: marked areas of a test subject's back are exposed to UV-A and UV-B radiation for a certain period.

This allows us to see how good the skin's self-protection is and how long the skin can withstand radiation with a protective UV filter.

A few facts for those who want to know more


  • Approval of sun protection products: No official approval is required for this. We therefore adhere to the general cosmetic regulations and the EU recommendations on sun protection from 22.09.2006.

  • We test according to ISO standards: We are ISO 24444:2010(E) and ISO 24443:2012(E) certified.

  • GMP regulations ensure production in a pharmaceutical environment. GMP ("Good Manufacturing Practice") refers to "Good Manufacturing Practice for medicinal products". The GMP rules are laid down in national and international regulations.
    The most important components of GMP are the requirements for hygiene, premises, equipment, documentation and controls. TattooMed produces according to valid GMP rules. It is therefore actually unnecessary to say that our employees have received and continue to receive the appropriate training.

  • TattooMed color protection through a special combination of UV filters. Due to the special combination of filters we have chosen for our products, UV radiation can be absorbed and reflected before it penetrates the epidermis (where the ink is introduced). The tattoo ink is therefore protected by the combination of filters.

  • The solar spectrum: sunlight consists of a whole spectrum of visible and invisible radiation (ranging from 280 – 3,000nm) Visible radiation


  • How deep the radiation penetrates your skin: The wavelength of the UV radiation determines how deep it penetrates the tissue. UV-A has a longer wavelength and therefore penetrates deeper into the tissue than UV-B.

What makes a UV filter a good filter?

Not all UV filters are equally good. Some even decompose under UV radiation. This reduces their protective effect and the breakdown products can severely irritate the skin. Some chemical sun protection filters can cause allergies.
