Sleeping with a New Tattoo | Do's and Don'ts
Sleeping with a new tattoo: do’s & don’ts
Sleeping with a fresh tattoo is… well, let’s be honest: it’s not the most pleasant experience. Your skin is sensitive, you’re afraid of accidentally rolling over, and then there’s that nightmare of waking up stuck to your sheets.
But don’t panic! With the right preparation and a few clever tips, you can safely get through the night and protect your new artwork.
Why is sleeping with a new tattoo so nerve-wracking?
A new tattoo is essentially an open wound. Your skin is vulnerable, and you naturally want to prevent infections, damage, or fading at all costs. Especially at night, when you have no control over your sleeping position or what happens to your tattoo, a lot can go wrong. But if you know what to look out for, it's really not that bad.
Sleeping with a fresh tattoo: our do’s & don’ts
1. Make sure your bed is clean
Clean sheets are your best friend. You don't want bacteria or dirt near your fresh ink. So change your bedding before your first night.
2. Do not pull on stuck sheets or clothing
During the first few nights, your sheet or T-shirt might stick to your tattoo. Not only is this uncomfortable, but it can also damage your skin if you pull it off abruptly.
What should you do if you get stuck?
- Wet the fabric with lukewarm water.
- Gently soak it loose—never pull!
- Afterward, gently wash your tattoo and care for it as usual.
3. Do not sleep on your new tattoo
Try to avoid sleeping directly on your tattoo. This is not only painful, but it can also fade the ink and slow down the healing process.
Can't sleep on your other side? Use an extra pillow to support yourself, so you don't accidentally roll onto your tattoo.

4. Pets? Not in bed for now
As cozy as it may be, don't let your dog or cat sleep in your bed for the first few nights. Pets unknowingly bring a lot of dirt and bacteria, and you really don't want that near your fresh tattoo.
5. Good aftercare before and after sleeping
During the first week, it's extra important to keep your tattoo clean and prevent it from drying out.
- Wash your tattoo in the morning and evening with TattooMed Cleansing Gel – a mild soap specifically developed for tattooed skin.
- Then apply a thin layer of TattooMed After Tattoo. Be careful: not too thick, your tattoo needs to breathe!
6. Extra tip: use tattoo film (second skin)
Do you want to sleep completely carefree? Consider using a special tattoo film (second skin) for the first few days. This film protects your tattoo from dirt, bacteria, and friction.
You won't need to moisturize your tattoo constantly, and you'll have less chance of it sticking to your sheets. Check out our tattoo film products — from Protection Film to Sun Film and Patches.
Handy checklist for the night
- ✅ Clean sheets? Check!
- ✅ No pets in bed? Check!
- ✅ Tattoo clean and thinly moisturized? Check!
- ✅ Not sleeping on your tattoo? Check!
- ✅ Used second skin film? Even easier!
Frequently asked questions about sleeping with a new tattoo
What if I wake up stuck to my sheets anyway?
Don't panic. Wet the fabric with lukewarm water and gently soak it loose. Then clean and care for it thoroughly.
Do I need to wash my tattoo every morning and evening?
Yes, especially in the first week. This removes wound fluid and prevents scab formation and infection.
Can I sleep with tattoo film on?
Yes, that's actually ideal! The film protects your tattoo and prevents it from sticking to your sheets.
How long do I need to be extra careful?
The first 7 to 10 days are the most important. After that, your tattoo is usually healed enough to sleep 'normally' again.
Can I cover my tattoo with cling film at night?
No, we advise against that. Cling film completely seals off your skin and creates a warm, moist environment where bacteria can multiply rapidly. Furthermore, it can shift during sleep, causing friction and irritation.
It's better to use a professional film like the ones you'll find on our film page. This protects against dirt and friction, prevents sticking, and allows your skin to breathe.
