Sun protection for tattoos | a handy overview
Sun protection for tattoos
Discover skin-friendly TattooMed Sun care!
You need to take good care of your tattoo. It's a precious thing that needs protection, even from the sun. And: even when the sun isn't shining!
Why is tattooed skin so sensitive to UV radiation?
That's a good question. We've listed the answers for you below!
-
UV radiation damages and alters skin cells.
-
Color pigment is affected by UV radiation and the body then breaks it down.
-
Certain colors react particularly strongly to heat and UV radiation. This causes the skin to swell slightly in the sun.
-
The skin can become sensitive, itchy, or sensitive to touch. Tattooed skin can also burn more quickly. This is especially the case with large tattoos and designs where a lot of white color is used.
-
If your tattoo is regularly exposed to the sun without being covered with good sunscreen, the color can fade more quickly and sharp lines can lose their crispness. A shame and something you want to avoid!
-
For all skin (with or without a tattoo), UV radiation accelerates the aging process, leading to wrinkles sooner.
-
Use extra good UV protection for sunny days.
Good to know before sunbathing with your tattoo
Before sunbathing (under a tanning bed or outdoors), you need to apply a sunscreen with the correct protection factor. If you don't, you could suffer quite a bit afterwards. A pity, because how much effort does it really take to apply some sunscreen?
Sun protection for long-lasting beautiful colors
Daily sun protection
For tattooed skin, we go a step further; even on non-sunny days, you need to protect it well from UV radiation. We are, of course, referring to skin that is not covered by clothing. Because even if you don't see the sun, the radiation is there. We have specially developed the Daily Tattoo Care for this.
No dull haze over your tattoo
On sunny days, we recommend the TattooMed LSF 30 sunscreen. This cream softens your skin and spreads well. It doesn't leave a dull haze over your tattoo. Also, remember to apply this cream regularly!
Extra sun protection
There are days when the sky is clear blue and the power of the sun is very strong. If you want to go to the beach on such a day, use the TattooMed Sun Protection 50 for your tattoo. This sunscreen protects the skin a bit better and longer. However, that doesn't mean you only need to apply it once a day... This cream also doesn't leave a dull haze over your tattoo.
Not greasy
Sunscreens can be sticky and not absorb well into the skin. Not pleasant and not necessary. Because we have paid extra attention to the texture of our sunscreens. This makes them absorb well into the skin (and therefore not sticky) and waterproof. So you don't have to worry about getting 'breaded' by the sand. Much nicer!
Tattoo care for on the go
Do you know that feeling? You leave home with a cloudy sky and on the way, the sun conjures up a bright blue sky. What do you want then? Exactly! To enjoy the sun without getting burned.
With your tattoo in the sun: 4 valuable tips
In the shade, you tan less quickly, but also get less red. Regularly find a nice cool spot in the shade, so your skin can rest. With a nice drink, a beautiful view, good company. How bad is it?
If you work outdoors, protect your skin with clothing or a sunshade. Do this in addition to applying one of the TattooMed Sun Care products, because working in the bright sun all day is simply not good for you.
Even if you don't seem to be getting burned, always apply sunscreen to your tattoo before and after sunbathing.
Drink enough water! The skin dries out in the sun anyway. You protect yourself from the outside and from the inside.

Overview TattooMed Sun Care
Below you will find a handy overview of TattooMed sunscreens, which protect your tattoo (and skin) from UV radiation.
TattooMed Sun Protection 30; a fine cream that protects your skin on sunny days.
Do you want to spend a day at the beach or go swimming? Then we recommend using TattooMed Sun Protection 50. This sunscreen protects the skin if you are in the sun for a bit longer.
Treat your skin afterwards with TattooMed After Sun. This rich lotion is moisturizing and cools the (somewhat stressed by the sun) skin. A wonderful product and a real must-have!
Absolutely do not let anything stop you from catching some sun rays now and then. That produces vitamin D, and that's good for you. But be careful! Too much sun can severely damage the skin with sunburn or worse. So pay close attention to this and seek shade from time to time.
And: keep applying sunscreen throughout the day! Because that's something that often gets forgotten ;)
Pay extra attention to your tattoo, because this skin is extra sensitive to sunlight. So protect it well, and you'll enjoy it the longest!
